http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=31572645853
Very great site.
The info here is truly valuable.
I will refer it to my friends.
Cheers
Hello “wheyp.roteinsideeffects”, thank you.
It would have been a lot more valuable if you had told me the reasons for which you find this page interesting and what are your interests in Livorno. The goal of this blog/website is the condivision and the exchange. Thanks anyway for your message.
Hi,
I’ve been trying to trace when and where my great-great-grandfather, Christopher Robert Baldock Wilkinson, died and was buried. Today I found out that his death was registered by the British Consulate at Leghorn (Livorno) between 1860-65. He was an officer in the (British)Royal Navy and was born c1823.
Can you help, please?
Regards,
A. Froggatt nee Wilkinson
Hello, thanks for writing in my blog about a foreigner in Livorno.
I have some death indexes for Leghorn until 1865 but I do not have complete indexes.
I just tried to make a search on the IGI index (familysearch) and I found the baptism and marriage of your ancestor:
CHRISTOPHER ROBERT BALDOCK WILKINSON – International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: Male Christening: 08 JUL 1823 Saint John, Portsea, Hampshire, England
Parents: JOHN WILKINSON and AGNES
CHRISTOPHER ROBERT BALDOCK WILKINSON – International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: Male Marriage: 18 SEP 1848 Saint Marys, Portsea, Hampshire, England
Wife: HARRIETT MATTHEWS
I hope it helps.
Matteo,
Thanks, I already have that information but I’m grateful to you for looking it up.
I was wondering if he was buried at the Old English Cemetery at Livorno, or maybe if his body was returned to England. I haven’t been able to find any records in the UK.
I see from the list of names you have provided that most deaths occurred long before 1860-65; is there a later Cemetery for foreigners in Livorno?
Thank you for your interest and help.
Hello again Ann,
he hasn’t been buried at the old English Cemetery because that cemetery was closed in 1838. After that date a new cemetery was opened outside Livorno’s city walls and it’s still in service. I have the registers of this second cemetery and I checked it out for you, but unluckily there’s no trace of your G-G-Grandfather, so if he was an anglican, he must have been buried elsewhere, probably back in Great Britain.
Your comment about my blog missing a later list of burials made me think of publishing one right away…
Thank you.
P.S. could you please tell me what is your source of information on his death at Leghorn in 1860-65 ?
Hello Matteo,
Thank you very much for checking that for me. He was an Anglican so presumably he would have been buried elsewhere, if the second cemetary is for Roman Catholics only.
I found the evidence of his death via findmypast.co.uk – they have published some of the Consular Records Books for British deaths outside Britain. His is listed in the 1860-1865 Book. I had been searching for nearly 3 years, but eventually I got lucky! I have contacted the GRO here with the information I found, and they are going to try to locate his official Death Certificate.
Thanks again for your efforts.
Hi again. You have to know that Livorno has a lot of cemeteries. These two we are speaking about are both for anglican/protestants. Since I didn’t find him in the list of burials for the second one, he must have been buried back home I guess. This was quite common since it was quite easy in Livorno to find a ship back to England; the port was very very active and connected with all destinations. Just for my personal curiosity, if you find the original certificate I would be interested in knowing if our theory was right and he has been buried in England. Thanks
Matteo, I think that as he was a naval officer he could well have been taken back to England on a RN ship. I very much want to know the cause of his death as he would only have been about 42 in 1865,so I’m hoping that the GRO will find me what I need. I’ll certainly let you know anything I discover.
Regards,
Ann
Matteo:
I’ve received a copy of the Death Certificate issued by the British Consulate at Leghorn. It states that the death occurred “At about 9 o’clock am of the 9th. February 1863 on board the British schooner ‘Heroine’ of Poole in this Port of Leghorn”.
He is described as aged 40, and Master Mariner in command of the ‘Heroine’, and formerly Second Master in the British Naval Service in which he served for eighteen years. The DC was registered on 20th. February by the Consular Officer Alex Macbean.
There is nothing that would suggest a cause of death, nor when or where he was buried, but given that he was such a young man and captain of the ship I would have expected a post mortem to have been carried out. Can you suggest how I could find out?
At the moment I can only think about the death act present in the acatholic registers of Livorno (1818-1865). They are kept in the communal archive but the access is only by appointment. I go there sometimes so I might check it out even if not really in the next hours or days. Please, could you send me an e-mail with his exact and complete name and details to my official e-mail address that you find on the homepage when you click on the Livorno logo on the upper left, just above the menu ?
I am not sure of which details we can find there but there might be some more information.
For sure he was not buried in Livorno, it seems. Did you check out his records at the Public Record Office (there’s an available online search for people in the Navy) ?
I just did a quick search on the Navy records at the National Archives and I found your ancestor:
Name Wilkinson, Christopher R B
Rank: 2nd Master
01 October 1856 ADM 196/79
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=7929878&queryType=1&resultcount=2
Name Wilkinson, Christopher R B

12 June 1849 ADM 196/76
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=7927480&queryType=1&resultcount=2
These two documents are available online with a small fee for each one. With the links I gave you here you can buy both documents and see them in PDF format. Let me know.
In Google Books I also found a note on his service on a ship:
http://books.google.it/books?id=0dcRAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA311&dq=%22christopher+r.+b.+wilkinson%22&cd=2#v=onepage&q=%22christopher%20r.%20b.%20wilkinson%22&f=false
I forgot something else:
I found that he had at least these brothers and sisters or cousins:
1. LAURA LUTTENER WILKINSON – International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 12 MAY 1812 Saint John, Portsea, Hampshire, England
2. THOMAS CLARENCE WILKINSON – International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 22 APR 1819 Saint John, Portsea, Hampshire, England
3. JOHN SHEPHERD WILKINSON – International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 27 JUN 1815 Saint John, Portsea, Hampshire, England
4. JOHN SINCLAIR WRIGHT WILKINSON – International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 24 MAY 1825 Saint John, Portsea, Hampshire, England
5. GEORGE WILKINSON – International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 26 SEP 1809 Saint John, Portsea, Hampshire, England
6. GEORGE WILKINSON – International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 18 MAR 1819 Saint John, Portsea, Hampshire, England
7. CHRISTOPHER ROBERT BALDOCK WILKINSON – International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 08 JUL 1823 Saint John, Portsea, Hampshire, England
8. CATHARINE AGNES WILKINSON – International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 10 MAR 1818 Saint John, Portsea, Hampshire, England
The other names which are not bold are probably linked as cousins or close parents.
I am also pretty sure that his parents were:
John WILKINSON and Agnes WALKER, who married on Jan. 30th, 1813 at Holy Trinity Church, Gosport (Hampshire).
Many thanks, Matteo. I have emailed you.
I am seeking any available info on Joseph Barnes of the above list. He was born in Virginia, was a consul appointee under Thomas Jefferson, and died in Livorno under some very interesting circumstances. I have a copy of a letter from American consul Appleton to Thomas Jefferson describing the circumstances- seems like he was in some very shady business before his death. Local government sealed his papers at death, so likely some records could still exist.I would love to see a photo of his stone if one exists, or to know what the original stone said, if there is a transcription in the 1906 book. I would be grateful for any assistance at all.

Hello LaVonda,
yes I know a little bit of Joseph Barnes. For him I would like to address you on my online database page:
http://gw0.geneanet.org/index.php3?b=alivornesi&lang=en;pz=matteo;nz=giunti;ocz=0;p=joseph;n=barnes
Check that out then please explain me what is your interest towards him so that I may learn something as well. Unluckily his stone was not on the 1906 book, meaning that the grave was not anymore there at that time. I have probably his death or burial act in my papers.
Hear you soon on this subject.
